Hungarian Drivers License minimum age requirement is 17 years to be able to operate a car in Hungary. You can buy a Hungarian Drivers License on our site.

Hungary operates a penalty point system for traffic offenses (e.g., not wearing a seat belt). When a driver accumulates 18 penalty points, they lose their license and can only re-apply after a six-month ban, and when they have completed a course.

A driver’s license can be issued to foreign citizens in Hungary who have stayed six months in Hungary before the issuance of the driver’s license.

If you already have a driver’s license, you can drive a vehicle for a period of one year from the start date of your continuous residence in case your license was issued in a country that joined the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic in 1968.

HUNGARIAN DRIVERS LICENSE
To drive in Hungary, the driver must present a valid national driver’s license that has been held for at least 1 or 2 years (according to different car rental companies).

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended for anyone living outside of Hungary. If your domestic driver’s license is printed in non-Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic, etc), an International Driving Permit (IDP/IDL) or an official translation in English is required when you drive in Hungary. Please note that an International Driving Permit (often referred to as an International Driver’s License) cannot replace the requirement for a regular driver’s license. You must carry your current overseas driver’s license, IDP, or translation with you all the time when driving in Hungary.

Tips

Some car rental companies require you to have a photo ID license. If your foreign license does not have a photo ID, you should get an IDP before traveling to Hungary if you intend to rent a car.

When renting in Hungary, all drivers with a UK license (except Northern Ireland) will need to provide evidence of any driving endorsements.

Age Requirement

To rent a car in Hungary you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category). Each car rental company has its own age requirements and a deviation from the minimum age is possible depending on the vehicle. If you’re 21-25, you are likely to have to pay a young driver fee.
